A convenient way to order copies of your vital records is online through VitalChek. VitalChek is an authorized online vital records ordering service for the City of New Haven. There are additional fees associated with this service. Please note, VitalChek DOES accept personal checks. We, the Office of Vital Statistics, DO NOT accept personal checks.

If a couple is planning to marry in New Haven, they must obtain a marriage license from the City of New Haven’s Office of Vital Statistics. The marriage license is issued to ensure that the couple is eligible to be married.
A marriage license issued from the New Haven Office of Vital Statistics is valid only for 65 days from the date it is initially issued to those who are being wed in the City of New Haven. You must be at least 18 years of age to apply. Both parties must be present in order to receive the license.
We encourage everyone to submit their marriage application online and schedule an in-person appointment, although only New Haven residents (at least one spouse must have a New Haven address) will continue to be allowed walk-in, same-day service to apply for a marriage license.
The Office of Vital Statistics is open Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:30pm, and 9:00am-2:00pm on the first Wednesday of the month.

Legal changes of name are only available in-person through New Haven’s Office of Vital Statistics and only if the individual was born in New Haven. In order to complete a legal change of name, you must do the following:
